Bicycling Facilities in The Netherlands

Do the Dutch bike so much because of great bicycling facilities or do The Netherlands have so much bicycling infrastructure because most people bike?

The following photos and maps will let you explore the variety and implementation of these bicycling facilities but to appreciate their pervasiveness, you'll need to go on a bike trip there to see:

  • PARALLEL PATHS (cyclepaths or cycleways) - alongside but separate from motor vehicles with dedicated traffic signs and lights

  • BIKE LANES - alongside motor vehicle lanes on roads where there's slower traffic or insufficient width for separate bike paths

  • SHARED WAYS - "bike streets", rural roads and upon narrow dikes with minimal motor traffic, residential streets with slow motor vehicles, pedestrian shopping streets with buses and trams, etc.

  • TRAFFIC-FREE PATHS - in the countryside through farmland, forest and dunes or along canals

  • BIKE PARKING & OTHER FACILITIES - bicycle drawbridges, counter-flow lanes, bike ferries, signage, bike tunnels, etc.

  • Of course, this optimum system isn't universal - in the oldest section of the cities, it's sometimes not physically possible to construct paths or lanes (or they are just not yet been built). In these limited cases, you share the road with motor vehicles, sometimes in quite busy traffic and sometimes with bike lanes alongside parked cars. However, usually this is only for a short distance between sections of bike paths or proper width bike lanes.

NOTES: I lived in The Netherlands for 4 months in 1980 and then from 1992 to 1995. During those times I biked hundreds of miles all over the country. I hope you'll enjoy and apply these examples of bike paths and related facilities. Any bicyclists in the photos wearing helmets are American family or friends
